About IBD

IBD can affect anyone at any time and has a huge impact on the quality of life of sufferers. It did for me and the only way I found long-lasting relief was by changing how I thought about food and lifestyle.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a term used to describe Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. These are chronic, long term autoimmune conditions where the immune system attacks the digestive system causing it to be inflamed and irritated.

Ulcerative colitis typically affects the colon (Large intestine) and Crohn’s can affect any part of the digestive system from the mouth to the anus. They are autoimmune diseases as it is the body’s own reaction that causes the injury to the tissues.

Symptoms include pain and swelling in the tummy, blood and mucus in stool, diarrhoea, urgency, weight loss, exhaustion and recurring mouth ulcers. Symptoms are varied and the disease behaves differently in different people.

People who suffer from this illness often feel trapped in a body that won’t cooperate. It can impact one’s social life, emotional and mental wellbeing.

Medical treatments for IBD include:

  • anti-inflammatory drugs

  • immunosupressants

  • biological medicines

  • surgery

Nutrition and lifestyle medicine therapies can be used alongside medical treatments to help support the body. The main aim is to stop autoimmune triggers and build up the health of the gut in order to reduce the severity of symptoms include:

  • functional lab testing to determine the main drivers for triggers including food intolerance, autoimmune triggers, and inflammation markers

  • food and diet plans of safe and healing foods

  • natural supplements

  • lifestyle audit to define main areas of stress

  • evidence-based stress-reduction techniques like meditation, mindset, yoga and other exercises
